Christian Outreach for the Handicapped
Aims
1. To raise funds for the Christian Outreach for the Handicapped (COH).
2. To raise awareness towards the issues faced by the handicapped.
3. To provide youths with the opportunity to interact with the handicapped.
4. To allow the handicapped to showcase their talents by designing various handicrafts and artwork.
Overview of Saints Outreach
Saints Outreach is a proposed social enterprise consisting of students from Saint Andrew’s Junior College, better known as Saints! We as a team, plan to cooperate and collaborate alongside the Christian Outreach for the Handicapped (COH) by assisting them in various ways to raise funds and create awareness as well as getting to know the issues or obstacles faced by them in their daily life. We are making it our goal to reach out towards the needs of the handicapped. Hence, our enterprise will be called “Saints Outreach”. Volunteers from schools would be recruited to raise funds through street sales and schools sales. Donation cans would be distributed to volunteers to further increase our fund-raising efforts. We also plan to make use of the various online websites such as paypal.com to garner our donations as a non profit initiate as well as through various social networking websites such as Friendster, MySpace and Facebook to post our links. Furthermore, we would be setting up a booth in our junior college to allow other fellow Saints to play a part in making this project a success. The crux of our project would be the major street sales held fortnightly in which we would gather all our volunteers to go to different locations to sell the merchandise prepared by COH and the team. There will also be a carnival held to further increase our funds from the sales of the tickets. Last but not least, strong bonds would definitely be formed apart from new lasting friendship with the people we work with especially with COH throughout this entire cause.
Details of the Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (COH)
The Christian Outreach to the Handicapped is an independent, interdenominational Christian charity organisation established in 1979, as a platform to provide facilities to the disabled. Although its initial target group was disabled children, COH has expanded throughout the years and is now accommodating adults, youths and senior citizens diagnosed with Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism and multiple disabilities. A day activity centre, the Emmanuel Activity Centre run by COH serves the following functions to reach out to the disabled people in Singapore:
(i) Serving those with lower functional levels who are not able to meet the admission criteria of other day care services
(ii) Providing support services for the basic needs of families with disabled members
(iii) Providing holistic care for these disabled members regardless of race, religion or financial background
(iv) Identifying and developing the potentials in the disabled individuals through close supervision of teacher staff
